Though it seemed at the time like a scene from some kind of SEC soap opera, the rumors of Lane Kiffin to LSU as the offensive coordinator were more than just rumors. It was happening.
Prior to Kiffin leaving Alabama for the FAU head coaching job, there were numerous reports suggesting Kiffin to LSU was very real. Then, the head coaching rumors started pouring in, first to Houston and then to FAU. FAU, of course, ended up happening.
But the thought of Kiffin reuniting with Ed Orgeron at LSU was juicy, and it certainly had legs. Even at the time, this seemed too scripted or too good to be true, LSU and Kiffin teaming up to attempt to conquer Nick Saban and Alabama.
Earlier this week, we heard Kiffin say his interest in LSU was real on Bo Mattingly’s ESPN radio show in Arkansas, but Friday night while speaking at the Northwestern State Legends Gala, Orgeron confirmed it (via TheAdvocate’s Ross Dellenger).
“We were looking at Lane Kiffin. He was going to come. He got a head job,” Orgeron said.
All of it seems a bit overblown by now, but we hadn’t heard Orgeron say that Kiffin was set to come before he got the FAU head coaching gig.
When it missed out on Kiffin, LSU hired former Pittsburgh Panthers’ OC Matt Canada, and his offense looks to be the most dynamic it has been in quite some time.
