Eli Drinkwitz has a bit of a comedian in him, and it’s hard to tell when he’s going to drop a line that will get people laughing.
One of Drinkwitz’s best lines of the 2023 season came during ESPN’s College Football Playoff and bowl reveal show. Upon learning that Missouri was facing Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl, Drinkwitz ended his interview with a perfectly timed joke about former Michigan analyst Connor Stalions.
While the joke left the ESPN crew rolling with laughter, Drinkwitz apologized to Rece Davis during an appearance for “The College GameDay Podcast.” A personal highlight for the head coach, Drinkwitz apologized for inducing a snort out of Davis during live TV.
“I have to apologize because you snorted on live television. I feel like for me: When it’s over and I’ve got 24 hours left and people are coming in to see me, I’m going to remind them. I made Rece Davis snort on live TV,” said Drinkwitz. “That may go on my tombstone.”

Davis and co-host Pete Thamel both shared a laugh at the exchange but asked for Drinkwitz to explain the lead up to his quick wit. The head coach said he realized he had his cell phone within reach and knew he was going to drop a line related to Stalions at the first chance he got.
“Honestly, I was sitting down at the chair and I had my cell phone in my chair, and I was like ‘If the opportunity presents itself,’ and it was because we were going against Ohio State, too,” Drinkwitz explained. “‘I’m dropping a Connor Stalions. I’ve got to.’ It just kind of happened to work out that way.”
