Recent media availability shows why Eli Drinkwitz may be the best quote among SEC’s offseason hires
Eli Drinkwitz hasn’t even coached a game for Missouri yet but the first-year Tiger coach continues to win over fans that have had the opportunity to hear him speak since landing the job in Columbia.
This offseason has been a busy one for Coach Drinkwitz as he’s seemingly taken shots at Arkansas, Ole Miss, and Kirk Herbstreit, while he’s also honored Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid, who recently got a shoutout from the leader of the Mizzou program.
Now Drinkwitz is back to discuss the Coronabros, Lou Saban and the Sun Belt conference, which were all topics during his Wednesday media availability.
Taking a note from the SEC’s recent promotion of the importance of wearing masks, Drinkwitz took issue with the fact doing so has become a political issue for many. Drinkwitz wasn’t taking any side other than rooting for the United States to beat the coronavirus during his recent Zoom call.
The call began with Drinkwitz wearing his mask and supporting the SEC’s decision to encourage fans to wear them.
“It’s OK to wear a mask…I’m just rooting for the United States of America, I’m just rooting for us to beat this disease, don’t care who’s right or wrong” — Mizzou head football coach Eli Drinkwitz on wearing a mask pic.twitter.com/4NtzUre9ys

During the call, Drinkwitz was asked about playing in front of small crowds. He had a zinger lined up for that one:
On a media Zoom, Mizzou's Eli Drinkwitz asked if he's ever coached in front of sparse crowds: "Brother, I coached in the Sun Belt."

Missouri’s coach also had a great line prepared when asked about the possibility of playing against Alabama, he wanted to know which Coach Saban would be coaching up the Tide:

Whether you liked Missouri’s hire of Drinkwitz at the time it was made or not, it’s hard not to appreciate the coach following an offseason of showing some personality since landing the job in Columbia. We all know the SEC desperately needs more coaches willing to show some personality as the Saban influence among the league’s coaches is particularly strong at the moment.
