In his 3rd year in the NFL, it has not been the season Mac Jones had hoped for.
The 15th overall pick from the 2021 NFL Draft has not progressed the way he or the New England Patriots have wanted. So far this season, he’s had just 5 touchdowns while throwing 4 interceptions and has completed just 64% of his passes.
With the lack of progression, many are searching for who to blame. ESPN analyst and former NFL quarterback Dan Orlovsky points to legendary head coach Bill Belichick.
“Respectfully, a significant amount,” Orlovsky said. “Since they drafted Mac Jones, give me one move that they’ve made that has been unquestionable, that’s going to make Mac Jones better. Outside of Bill O’Brien this year, one move. There hasn’t been this really big offensive line signing that’s going to make them that much better. There hasn’t been a perimeter player that you know, here we go that’s going to help. Obviously last year was a complete disaster, I tried to tell everyone about that.”
The Patriots have had 3 offensive coordinators in as many years, and Orlovsky believes that, combined with the lack of big signings on the Patriots end, has led to Jones’ regression.
“So we’re asking this 3rd-year quarterback that’s got his 3rd offensive coordinator in 3 years, who’s had a defensive disaster as his play caller the last year to go, ‘take the jump, take the leap,'” Orlovsky said. “Now Mac Jones, you’ve got to own some of your own stuff when it comes to your feet in the pocket, I’ve talked about that Monday morning.”
