There isn’t much debate around the country about the top two teams in college football.

A quartet of ESPN reporters agreed about Alabama and Clemson, and also ranked Notre Dame and Michigan to round out the top four. Michigan jumped to No. 3 following its rout of Penn State, and LSU’s loss to Alabama.

There could be chaos lurking ahead. The reporters, Andrea Adelson, Edward Aschoff, Chris Low and Adam Rittenberg, wondered if Notre Dame loses, and Michigan runs the table and wins the Big Ten, how do the rankings shake out, knowing that Notre Dame already beat Michigan?

In the official College Football Playoff rankings announced last week, the top six teams were Alabama, Clemson, LSU, Notre Dame, Michigan and Georgia.

As the number of one-loss teams continues to grow, the committee will be forced to explain how it feels about each team’s resume, strength of schedule and eye test.

The updated set of rankings is set to be released on Tuesday night.
