Former Alabama quarterback to serve as head referee in Tennessee vs. Mississippi State game

Life in the SEC means that there’s always some crazy storyline to follow from week to week, no matter who your team is, and that holds true for the No. 15 Tennessee Volunteers‘ Week 5 matchup against the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

The Vols are hitting the road and heading into one of the most underrated environments in all of college football, and, according to the official pre-game notes, the head referee for the game will be none other than former Alabama quarterback David Smith.

It’s been a while since Smith played for the Tide. He was part of the program during the late 80s and was their starting quarterback during his senior season in 1988. He’s been an SEC referee for over a decade at this point as well.

Smith has long been considered one of the absolute best officials in the nation. He was an alternate official for this past January’s College Football Playoff National Championship game between the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in Atlanta, and has a long track record of calling games at a very high level.

There’s no question that he’ll be calling the game right down the middle in Starkville this afternoon in what should be a very good matchup between two non-traditional SEC opponents.
