The Auburn Tigers are bringing back one of their own in a staff capacity.
Gus Malzahn announced Friday that former Auburn LB Tre’ Williams is joining the staff.
“He’s going to help us in a recruiting role, and he’ll do a super job,” Malzahn said. “But I really expect him to be in the NFL next year.”
The Mobile, Alabama, native was a 5-star prospect in the class of 2014, and he eventually grew into a second-team All-SEC player last season. He played in 36 games and made 10 starts during his career, racking up 138 tackles.
Following his four-year career at Auburn, he signed an undrafted free agent deal with the Jets but was cut due to a shoulder injury. Malzahn told reporters he has since had surgery to repair the damage.
“There’s no doubt he would’ve had a great chance of making it this year, but he had an injury, got DQ’d and then had surgery.”
Exiting high school, Williams was ranked as the nation’s No. 2 overall ILB and the state of Alabama’s No. 4 overall prospect, according to 247Sports Composite Rankings.
