With news that some Division I colleges are being forced to cut certain sports due to budgetary shortfalls amid the COVID-19 pandemic, it is becoming increasingly important that football is played in some form or fashion this school year.
There have been rumors that the SEC will find a way to go ahead with a season, whether other conferences can participate or not.
On “The Paul Finebaum Show” this week, former SEC commissioner Roy Kramer said he believes the SEC will find a way to play football (via 247Sports):
“Well, certainly as far as the regular season, that’s going to be done by conferences and there will be inequities … some will be able to do certain things and others won’t,” Kramer told Finebaum. “We’ll have to live with that and make it work. You may see some conferences moving forward and others being hesitant. What that does to non-conference schedules is another factor, but I think that there will be some kind of agreement that would allow you to move forward within that conference.
“I’m optimistic that the SEC will be one of those conferences that will find a way to move forward. Obviously, (COVID-19) is a terrible thing, and I’m not trying to downgrade it anyway, but eventually, we have to maintain a lifestyle, and that lifestyle has to go on. We’ve been through various crises before and, to some degree, we have to move through that and make tough decisions. But I’m confident those decisions will be made and we’ll get back to normal.”
There’s still time to figure out the details of a season and what it could potentially look like, but there is momentum building that something will be done.
