Former LSU kicker Trent Domingue fell into the lap of the Texas Longhorns, and their coaching staff is loving it.
After LSU didn’t renew Domingue’s scholarship, he transferred to Austin to play for Charlie Strong and the Horns. Tuesday, Domingue talked about his transfer and the connection that helped the transfer happen: former LSU assistant coach Brick Haley.
“I’ve always known that Texas has been a pretty storied program, both academically and athletically,” Domingue said via 247Sports. “I knew coach Brick (Haley) from LSU, and he’s a big reason why I had interest in Texas initially. I’m really excited to get there and start training and getting to know everyone. Coach Strong is great and seems like a players coach. I think it will be an awesome time playing for him.”
Haley coached LSU’s defensive line from 2009 to 2014.
Domingue was a 2015 Lou Groza Award Semifinalist.
As the starting placekicker in 2015, Domingue finished 13-for-17 on field goals last season and 49-of-50 extra-points. He redshirted in 2012 and did not see any game action in 2013. During his sophomore season, he handled the kickoff duties and recorded 28 touchbacks on the season.
“We’re obviously thrilled that Trent decided to join our program,” Strong said. “What a great addition in a critical position of need for us. Trent’s an experienced and proven kicker who has had a great deal of success at the highest level and competed in pressure situations. He’ll be a strong leader on our special teams, and we look forward to getting him on campus.”
Since Domingue is a graduate transfer, he’ll be able to play immediately in 2016.
