Edwards-Helaire was placed on the NFI to begin the season as he dealt with PTSD. It all traces back to a transaction gone wrong at LSU in 2018, leading to a man being shot in self-defense. Though the incident was years ago, Edwards-Helaire told ESPN in August he continued to deal with PTSD, including interruptions to football training and practice.
Edwards-Helaire is entering his fifth professional season. In his NFL career, he has played in 48 regular-season games, making 32 starts. He has recorded 441 carries for 1,845 yards and 12 touchdowns. Edwards-Helaire saw decreased use in recent years with the Chiefs, but he could be a key factor upon his return.
Kansas City’s RB1, Isiah Pacheco, is currently on injured reserve. In his absence, the Chiefs have brought back Kareem Hunt while also giving carries to Carson Steele and Samaje Perine.
The Chiefs travel to San Francisco to face the 49ers on Sunday.
