Former Mississippi State player defends Dan Mullen after slow start

The Mississippi State Bulldogs have gotten off to a slow start in 2016, losing three of their first five games.
In the cutthroat SEC West, that slow start has many speculating that coach Dan Mullen is on the hot seat.
However, according to 247Sports, former Mississippi State WR Chad Bumphis had some strong words for people who think Mullen should be fired:
“It pisses me off, honestly,” Bumphis, who coaches wide receivers at Iowa Wesleyan, told 247Sports this week. “He took a bunch of two or three-star kids in Mississippi to No. 1 in the country two years ago, right? Two years ago. … Now all of a sudden he’s a bad coach because we had a slow start to one year?”
Bumphis added that Mullen is a big reason why the Bulldogs are in a position to be disappointed by a slow start:
“The reason we have such expectations is because of him,” Bumphis said. “Before he got there, nobody cared. If we went to the Liberty Bowl every other year people were excited. He changed all that.”
The Bulldogs have a chance to rebound a little bit on Friday night when they travel to Provo, Utah, to take on BYU.
