Former Missouri DE Michael Sam is stepping away from football, he announced on his Twitter account Friday.

Sam took to Twitter to cite mental health issues as the reason.

Sam did not play in Montreal’s game against Edmonton on Thursday night because of a sore back. He made his CFL debut the previous week.

He was selected in the seventh round of the 2014 NFL draft by the St. Louis Rams, but did not make the team. Sam also spent some time on the Cowboys’ practice squad before being released.
