Former ref calls out ‘egregious’ missed call on Texas A&M’s game-winning TD vs. Notre Dame
Former ref Terry McAulay was an NFL official for some 2 decades, working 7 conference championship games and 3 Super Bowls. He had a legendary run as an official at the highest level, and so he rightfully feels confident to comment on a missed call or 2 now, whether it’s in the NFL, college, or whatever level of the game.
McAulay did just that late Saturday night in the aftermath of Texas A&M‘s thrilling 41-40 victory at Notre Dame. The Aggies prevailed when Marcel Reed connected with Nate Boerkircher on an 11-yard scoring pass with 13 seconds left in the game. The touchdown came on 4th down, too, which just added to the drama, because if there was no touchdown, there was no downs left for Texas A&M to win.
And McAulay believes that winning touchdown shouldn’t have happened, or at least not on that particular play. He posted on his social media account after it was all over that Texas A&M should have been called for an offensive holding penalty, negating the touchdown and perhaps changing the outcome.
McAulay posted this after the game, mentioning that the game situation shouldn’t dictate whether a call like that is made or not.
He called the missed call “egregious” in this post:
Of course, the holding call wasn’t made, and Texas A&M escaped Notre Dame Stadium with the memorable victory and a 3-0 start to its season.
