After resigning from Kentucky in 2020, veteran assistant coach Michael Smith is reportedly returning to college football coach. According to John Brice of FootballScoop, Smith will be part of the staff at South Alabama.

Smith has been in college coaching since joining the Kansas State staff in 1993 as a graduate assistant. In 2013, he joined the Arkansas coaching staff and served as the Razorbacks’ wide receivers coach through the 2017 season. In Fayetteville, Smith took over a wide receivers corps in 2013 that had lost four players to the NFL draft over the previous two years and turned it back into one of the strengths of the program.

Smith left for Kentucky in 2018. After two seasons on Mark Stoops’ staff, he resigned on March 10, 2020. In Smith’s first year at Kentucky in 2018, he helped develop Lynn Bowden Jr. into one of the best wide receivers in the SEC. Bowden caught 67 passes and was named All-SEC as an all-purpose player.

Smith won’t be the only Jaguar with SEC ties. New head coach Kane Wommack hired Alabama analyst Major Applewhite as the team’s offensive coordinator. The team recently landed a transfer commitment from former South Carolina QB Jake Bentley.
