Former Texas head coach Tom Herman is looking for work again after being fired as FAU’s head coach on Monday, sources told 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz, Richard Johnson and Chris Hummer.

Herman’s Owls fell to 2-8 this season after Saturday’s overtime loss to Temple. Herman was in his 2nd season at FAU, hoping to bring the program to new heights, but instead he’s reportedly out after posting just a 6-16 record after a 4-8 season in 2023.

FAU associate head coach and special teams coordinator Chad Lunsford is expected to be the program’s interim head coach, as the Owls finish a forgettable 2024 season with games against Charlotte and Tulsa.

FAU will owe Herman just over a $4 million buyout, according to USA Today. Herman’s firing makes for 8 FBS head coaching changes already this season, with all of them being on the Group of Five level.

The Owls will be looking for their 3rd head coach since 2020 after Lane Kiffin left the program for Ole Miss.

Herman coached at Texas from 2017-20, going 32-18 in Austin before joining the Chicago Bears coaching staff in 2021 as an offensive analyst and special projects coach. Herman was not retained by new head coach Matt Eberflus for the 2022 season.

Herman also went 22-4 as the head coach at Houston in 2015 and ’16, leading the Cougars to a 13-1 record in 2015.
