Legendary coach Frank Beamer believes his son is ‘more than ready’ for South Carolina job
It should come as no surprise that legendary Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer is fully endorsing his son, Shane Beamer, as South Carolina’s next head coach.
The Gamecocks officially hired Shane on Sunday, making him their 36th coach in school history.
In an interview with ESPN.com’s Chris Low, Frank said his son was “more than ready” for the challenge and detailed just how long Shane has been preparing for a role like this.
Frank told a story about Shane carrying the cord for his headset on the sideline during games when he was just 11 years old. Apparently, Shane thought he needed to get some extra reps in. He decided to practice holding the cord by himself in their family garage the night before games.
“That probably tells you everything you need to know about him,” Frank told ESPN. “Most people who are going to handle the cord on the sideline just go out there and do it, but Shane — even that young — wanted to make sure he was perfect.”
Frank also praised Shane’s work ethic from a young age.
“He practiced hard, planned hard and worked hard to make the outcome be what he wanted it to be,” he told ESPN.
Shane has been a full-time assistant coach since 2004. He started at Mississippi State before moving on to South Carolina to be a defensive assistant and special teams coach for Steve Spurrier.
“He’s so detailed and so organized,” Frank told ESPN. “He takes after his mom in that regard. Thank goodness. I’ve always said to take care of the little things and the big things will come. And that’s Shane.”
Shane’s first major task as South Carolina’s head coach will be preparing the Gamecocks 2021 recruiting class. The first Early Signing Period window opens on Wednesday, Dec. 16.
