Gary Danielson called his final “SEC on CBS” broadcast in the regular season on Saturday between Iron Bowl rivals Alabama and Auburn. Danielson will move to the Big Ten next season, and will finish out this year with the SEC Championship Game and the Army-Navy game.

But to start the Iron Bowl, Danielson surprised fans, who often call him an Alabama homer, by criticizing a controversial non-call when Alabama had a blatant facemask on a kick return.

The SEC on CBS has helped the conference build national prominence as the marquee 3:30 p.m. ET game has delivered huge audiences for years. Danielson himself has credited the hunger of SEC fan bases for helping media all around.

“The real hidden strength of (the SEC) is the demand of the fan base,” Danielson said. “You have to produce. You, Saturday Down South, have to produce. You can’t lollygag and give them crap. You’ve gotta produce … we all have to produce. It’s been great. That’s the way it should be.”
