Gary Patterson is coming back to college football in 2024 to work for a former rival. The ex-TCU head coach will be a Senior Level Strategic Consultant on Dave Aranda’s Baylor staff, according to reports.
Baylor and TCU have met 119 times and are set to play on Nov. 2. TCU leads the Bluebonnet Battle series 59-53-7 all-time. In the “Revivalry,” Patterson had a 9-4 record in 13 contests played from 2006-to-2020. Patterson resigned a week before the 2021 game.
Patterson, who turns 64 on Feb. 13, was TCU’s head coach from 2000-to-2021 after three seasons as defensive coordinator and safeties coach. The Horned Frogs posted a 181-79 record under Patterson, going 11-6 in bowl games. TCU won six conference champions under Patterson as a program in Conference USA (2002), the Mountain West (2005, 2009-11) and Big 12 (2014).
Patterson hasn’t shied from associating with TCU rivals since his tenure in Fort Worth came to a close. In 2022, he was a special assistant to the head coach on Steve Sarkisian’s Texas staff.
Aranda, meanwhile, is entering his fifth season in Waco. Baylor is 23-25 through four seasons of Aranda’s up-and-down tenure. After a 2-7 season in 2020, the Bears turned things around under Aranda. Baylor’s 2021 team went 12-2, winning the Big 12 and the Sugar Bowl.
Since the Sugar Bowl win, however, the Bears have experienced back-to-back losing seasons, going just 3-9 in 2023.
