Georgia defeated NC State 11-2 on Sunday afternoon in Athens, forcing a winner-take-all Game 3 on Monday.

It was a huge response for the Bulldogs, who lost 18-1 to NC State on Saturday. Georgia entered the day on the brink of elimination, but will now get a chance to head to Omaha if it can win a decisive Game 3 at home.

Georgia’s bats got hot early with 2 runs in the first inning on a home run by Slate Alford. The Bulldogs then added 3 more runs in the third and fourth frames to make it an 8-0 ball game. Tre Phelps got the big hit — a 3-run homer in the top of the 3rd inning to break the game open.

Leighton Finley got the start on the mound for Georgia and pitched a great game. He scattered 8 hits across 6.2 innings, but allowed just 1 earned run while striking out 5. Brian Zeldin pitched the final 2.1 innings, which sets up the Bulldogs to have a well-rested bullpen for the final game of the series.

Georgia has a couple of options for Game 3 on Monday. Zach Harris started Game 3 of the Athens Regional last week and could be in line for another start in a key spot on Monday. He pitched well last week, throwing 6 innings of 4-run ball in a game that UGA eventually won in extra innings. Christian Mracna, who has been both a starter and a reliever at times this season, has not pitched yet in this series and figures to be available as well.

Georgia is playing for its first trip to the College World Series since 2008. A start time for Game 3 is still to be announced.
