A pair of Georgia players are making headlines for the wrong reasons.
UGASports and other outlets are reporting that two Bulldog players were arrested on reckless driving charges this week. Linebacker Smael Mondon and offensive lineman Bo Hughley are facing the charges from separate incidents.
Per Anthony Dasher of Rivals, Athens-Clarke County police records show Mondon was arrested at 11:05 p.m. Wednesday on misdemeanor charges of racing on highway streets and reckless driving. He was released at 12:25 a.m. Thursday on bond.
Hughley was arrested at 8:37 p.m. Tuesday on charges of reckless driving and failure to maintain proper lane, per the report. He was arrested as the results of an investigation pertaining to a single-car accident on River Loop Road.
Hughley was released on bond at 10:08 p.m. Tuesday.
Thursday’s news of arrest comes after prominent transfer running back Trevor Etienne accepted a plea deal in which DUI charges were dismissed after pleading no contest to a reckless driving charge and guilty to charges of underage possession of alcohol, failure to maintain lane and a window-tint violation. Reckless driving is a misdemeanor charge in Georgia.
Per Jordan D. Hill of 247Sports, Georgia is now at 4 offseason arrests following Etienne and wide receiver Sacovie White (May 18, reckless driving). Last year, Jamon Dumas-Johnson, Jalen Carter, Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint and De’Nylon Morrissette all faced driving-related arrests. In January 2023, offensive lineman Devin Willock and staffer Chandler LeCroy tragically lost their lives in an auto accident.
We’ll see if Georgia coach Kirby Smart addresses the driving incidents next week at SEC Media Days in Dallas. UGA begins its 2024 season on Aug. 31 against Clemson in Atlanta.
