Georgia Tech has reportedly moved on from Geoff Collins as football coach, and Todd Stansbury as athletics director.
They were told on Monday morning by President Angel Cabrera that they have been dismissed, according to a person familiar with the situation, Ken Sugiura of the AJC reported.
The Yellow Jackets are 10-28 under Collins, and failed to win more than 3 games in a single season. Georgia Tech fell to 1-3 in 2022 after a 27-10 loss at UCF on Saturday. Collins’ squad has also lost to Clemson and Ole Miss this season, with the lone win coming against FCS program Western Carolina.
Stansbury was hired in 2016 from Oregon State to run his alma mater’s athletic department, and he hired Collins in December 2018 from Temple to succeed Paul Johnson.
Stansbury gave Collins a seven-year contract, which was unusual at the time, but the AD said it was necessary to attract a coach given the transformation that would be necessary in succeeding Paul Johnson and his option offense, the AJC reported. Stansbury also faced backlash because of Collins is contractually due the full amount remaining on his final 3 years, $10.5 million. Both the length of the deal and the buyout also raised questions among supporters, particularly as the Jackets’ losses mounted.
Collins spent several years in the SEC.
Collins, 51, has been in coaching since 1993. He was on Alabama’s staff in 2007 as director of player personnel. From 2011-to-2014 he was on Mississippi State’s staff as co-defensive coordinator and later sole DC. Collins was Florida’s defensive coordinator for the 2015 and ’16 seasons.
