Greg McElroy names team that should feel ‘frustrated’ by initial CFP ranking
Greg McElroy took a few minutes to process the first College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday night, and when the ESPN college football analyst was done, he came away feeling that one team in particular got a little bit of a raw deal.
No, it wasn’t Georgia, which saw Ohio State slide ahead of it into the No. 2 spot behind Oregon. It was undefeated BYU, which has done all it can do in winning its first 8 games of the 2024 season yet was slotted 9th in the initial rankings. The Cougars are not only behind No. 8 Indiana and No. 4 Miami, who are at least also undefeated, but they also found themselves behind Texas, Penn State and Tennessee, who are all one-loss teams.
“If I’m BYU, I’m really upset,” said McElroy during Tuesday night’s rankings show on ESPN. “I’m sitting there behind Texas, Penn State, I’m also sitting there behind Tennessee. Texas and Penn State don’t have a win against a Top 25 team. I have two. So, if I’m BYU, I haven’t lost. If I’m BYU, I’m a little frustrated with how this thing has shaken out.”

McElroy is well aware that this is only the beginning of the ranking process as we progress through November, but he still believes BYU should feel slighted.
“I know it’s early, I know there’s plenty still on the table, and (BYU goes) to Utah this week, I get that,” added McElroy.
Time will tell if BYU gets better treatment from the Playoff committee, providing the Cougars keep winning themselves, of course.
