Greg McElroy understands that Alabama is always going to be held to a different standard, but that didn’t keep him from suggesting another big season for the Crimson Tide.
“Not compared to normal teams, or other teams, compared to Alabama,” he said.
On his “Always College Football” podcast, McElroy gave his breakdown of Alabama.
“It seems like this year could be one of, if not their best teams on paper,” McElroy said.
The standard comes into play when evaluating the Crimson Tide and measuring this year’s group against the program’s best. That’s why he said the defensive line may not be as good as the 2015 or 2016 version with Jonathan Allen and Da’Ron Payne.
At quarterback, McElroy said Bryce Young is the best QB in college football, and noted that Ohio State’s CJ Stroud is phenomenal.
“But what Bryce Young does, and how he makes everybody else better, it cannot be overstated,” McElroy said. “He has great feel, he has great instincts. … He can run, but he’s not a runner. What I think is most impressive is that when you guys get thrust into the starting lineup, their first instinct is to rely on athleticism, as opposed to their intellect. Bryce Young is the exact opposite.”
McElroy called Jahmyr Gibbs the “most electric” back at Alabama since Kenyon Drake.
McElroy also suggests that the wide receiver group needs to step up. Here’s his full breakdown:
