Greg McElroy was on the broadcast for the Alabama and Vanderbilt game, and it was the Crimson Tide that were able to go get the 30-14 win against the Commodores.
The score doesn’t quite give the game justice for how competitive the game was, as it was a single possession game for the majority of the day.
Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia led the team to the upset in this matchup last year, and was talking a lot of trash heading into this game. However, at the end of the broadcast, McElroy and play-by-play broadcast Sean McDonough called him out and said he didn’t back up the talk.
“They’re OK with him being brash and saying what he said, but you have to back it up. He didn’t back it up today,” McDonough said.
McElroy echoed the statement that his broadcast partner did, but doesn’t think this is the end for Pavia and the Commodores.
“No, he didn’t. He did not have his best stuff whatsoever,” McElroy added. “That man’s a warrior. Fully expect him to bounce back in a big way, but to beat the Tide in Tuscaloosa you have to be at your best and he wasn’t.”
Pavia was good early, but finished 21-of-35 for 198 yards and one touchdown. He also rushed for 58 yards, but had both an interception and a fumble that really hurt drives.
The Commodores showed even in the loss that they can compete with anybody, and they will need to cause the schedule doesn’t get any easier. They will be off next weekend before welcoming LSU to Nashville on Oct. 18.
