There is some major star power in Columbia, South Carolina, this season.

The Gamecocks have one of the best all-around defensive players in college football in Dylan Stewart. And, on the other side, they have one of the most exciting young quarterbacks in the game in LaNorris Sellers. As a first-year starter last fall, Sellers completed 65.6% of his passes for 2,534 yards while adding 674 yards on the ground. He went over 100 rushing yards in a game twice, had more than 300 passing yards in back-to-back games in November, and supplied 25 total touchdowns.

With the conclusion of the 2025 NFL Draft, the attention has all but officially shifted to the next generation of college football stars, and Sellers is getting some summer buzz as a candidate to join that group. He has popped up in several first-round 2026 mock drafts throughout the week, and was named by ESPN’s Greg McElroy recently as the seventh-best quarterback in the country entering the 2025 season.

“All you have to do is watch the young man play. Watch how big he is, but how effortless his moves are,” McElroy said on his show, the Always College Football podcast. “It’s kind of amazing to me that a guy that’s 240 pounds can move laterally as easily as he does. … I would expect him to be a power runner, QB power, running guys over. That’s not really how he plays. He is light on his feet. He can move. He can escape and he can keep his eyes down field and he is really, really accurate when he gets his feet set.”

On the heels of a 9-win season that saw the Gamecocks produce a legitimate case for inclusion in the College Football Playoff, there are real expectations for Shane Beamer and Co. this fall. South Carolina closed out the regular season with 6 straight wins, 4 of which came against teams that were ranked at the time of the meeting.

Over his last 5 regular-season games, Sellers had 3 games with a QBR north of 80. He posted a 91.9 QBR in the 17-14 win at Clemson, when he ran for 166 yards, threw for 164, and scored the Gamecocks’ only touchdowns of the day.

“If they can just figure out the pieces around LaNorris Sellers, he’s poised for a great 2025 season,” McElroy continued. “He already won SEC Freshman of the Year last year. Was third-team all-conference, which is pretty amazing. By the way, he was banged up some of the year with an ankle injury. … I think this is a young man, the sky is the limit for what he could be.”
