Greg McElroy watched the Tennessee and Syracuse to see how new Volunteers quarterback Joey Aguilar would play in his first game in Knoxville.

The Volunteers were in control of the game from the very beginning, running away with a 45-26 victory over the Orange.

During a segment on his show Always College Football, McElroy saw a lot of good things out of the App State transfer.

“I thought in Joey Aguilar’s first start, it was pretty good,” McElroy said. “It was solid, right? I thought he was pretty efficient. 16-28, 247, 3 touchdowns. I thought there were a few throws that were very, very nicely placed. Thought he did some nice things on critical down and distance. Also had a couple big plays that were created, so that was encouraging.”

Aguilar finished the game 16-of-28 for 247 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing for another 34 yards. He showcased the big play potential with his arm, as he connected with Braylen Staley on a 73-yard touchdown.

Aguilar had spent two seasons at App State, where he threw for 6,760 yards and 56 touchdowns. He announced he was entering the transfer portal, and ended up going to UCLA in December. However, he entered the transfer portal again in April after Nico Iamaleava transferred from Tennessee and ended up the Bruins starting quarterback.

Tennessee fans got the last laugh on Saturday night, as Iamaleava and the Bruins lost 43-10 to Utah.

The Volunteers will be back in action against East Tennessee State next week, but a much tougher test is coming for Aguilar when Georgia goes to Knoxville in two weeks.
