Greg Sankey calls for a return to ‘essence of decision making’ in CFP talks

Greg Sankey, the SEC’s commissioner, made it clear Monday morning that he is against the idea of implementing automatic qualifiers for a new format of the College Football Playoff.
It was always known that the current iteration of the College Football Playoff will be scrapped in favor of a new Playoff system. But just exactly how and what it will look like in future years is still yet to be determined as conference officials come together to put the pieces in place.
According to Sankey during his appearance on the Dan Patrick Show, some of the wrong things are being prioritized while negotiating that all-important decision. Sankey wants less focus on side arguments regarding what can or can’t be done, and more focus on the fundamentals or “essence of decision-making.”
“Here’s what I think. We’ve spent so much time expanding and working through our own little side arguments about teams and ‘Oh, we can’t do this, we need this, you gotta protect this bowl game or that bowl game,'” Sankey said. “We never went back to the essence of decision making, which is, ‘How are teams selected? Has everyone relocated over the last 5 years? Do the analyses that existed and worked for the 4-team playoff in 2014 still have the same relevance?’ We’re behind that curve in my opinion.”
