HOOVER, Ala. — One of the biggest revelations to come out this week during SEC Media Days was the news that the Southeastern Conference is considering a new site for the league’s annual preseason event. Atlanta, Nashville and Dallas are among the destinations rumored to be in the running as new sites.

Considering there likely isn’t a person more intimately involved in those discussions than SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey, we decided to ask him directly during the recording of one of our latest Saturday Down South podcast episodes.

According to Sankey, the wheels are in motion to move the event but nothing has been finalized at this point.

“You could imagine we are contacted about any number of events over time but the genesis of that topic was a comment I made back in April to say perhaps a different location is something that has been on my mind, I think that was the quote,” Sankey said. “There’s no sense denying it, we’re thinking about those things and the comparative is we have a men’s basketball tournament this March that will be played in St. Louis, Missouri.

“If you go back 10 years and said, ‘Hey, do you think the SEC will ever have a basketball tournament in St. Louis?’ Most people would say that will never happen, but that’s our reality — and that’s our reality as it relates to every one of our events. I think it’s an appropriate thought, I’ve not predicted where or when. I’ve seen talk it’s going to be these destinations — we’ve not specified any destinations, we’ve not specified next year or the year after, or some other year.

“Hoover has been a great host, is a great host and we’ll have those opportunities in the future one way or another, I’m sure.”
