Greg Sankey is in Atlanta this week at the SEC Media Days, where he is giving updates on many things across the college football landscape. One of the biggest talking points over the summer has been whether or not there would be any changes to the College Football Playoff format.
Last season was the first time in the history of the CFP that 12 teams were competing for a national title, but the college football world still had complaints about which teams ended up making the field.
On Monday, Sankey provided the media with an update on what the selection committee talked about in its June meeting.
“June’s CFP Management Committee meetings focused on Selection Committee protocol evaluation and updates, considering an improved strength of schedule analysis, and introduction of a possible new strength of record metric which, consistent with my comments after our Spring Meetings, we view as the right directions for CFP focus. More work is needed and more needs to be understood but we view this as the current right direction with the need for timely decision-making.”

Last year, the SEC received only 3 bids to the CFP, despite being regarded as 1 of the top 2 conferences in the country. Teams like South Carolina, Alabama and Ole Miss all had their own respective reasons why they could have made it, with all 3 of them having a win against a team that made the playoffs.
Sankey has not been shy in saying that he believes the SEC deserves to have more than 2 teams in the CFP. He has also been a strong proponent of strength of schedule playing a much bigger role in what teams make the CFP, and that conversation will only continue throughout the upcoming season.
