Gus Malzahn calls Kerryon Johnson a ‘warrior’ following huge performance in win over Ole Miss
Auburn will now head into LSU with a perfect 3-0 mark in SEC play after the Tigers beat up on Ole Miss on The Plains Saturday by a score of 44-23.
Immediately after the game ended, head coach Gus Malzahn expressed his pleasure in seeing his team go and handle its business against a conference foe that has played Auburn tight in the past.
When asked about Kerryon Johnson’s performance, he ran for 204 yards and three touchdowns in the game, Malzahn had nothing but glowing things to say.
“He’s a warrior,” Malzhan said during his postgame comments. “He’s a heck of a running back. You’ve seen him run, he’s a heck of the football player.”
The progress of team’s receivers has also been noticeable to their coach.
“Each game we need to get better. I think we’ve improved in blocking. Doing a good job getting open, playing with a lot of confidence.”
Malzahn on his offense playing with more tempo:
“Tempo. that’s who we are. Running with tempo, I think Chip is doing a super job of his tempo game. He’s done a great job
On the status of running back Kam Pettway (who did not play in this game):
“We held him out to get him healthy. What we’ve been trying isn’t working, trying to get him a little work.”
Looking ahead to the trip to Death Valley to play LSU next weekend:
“Last time we played on the road, we played well.”
Here’s Malzahn’s opening statement after the big win:
