Auburn coach Gus Malzahn made waves Monday morning by naming Baylor transfer Jarrett Stidham his starting quarterback. The former Baylor signal caller transferred into the program last winter and following an impressive spring, which was followed by an offseason of work this summer, the decision to elevate Stidham atop the depth chart was made.

During his Monday afternoon media availability, Malzahn broke down the thought process behind the decision and continued to express his belief in the Tigers backup Sean White.

“He’s earned that. He’s performed very well the last two weeks. He performed very well in the spring too, but like I said, we wanted to give Sean White a real chance to compete and Sean competed very well,” Malzahn said. “I think Sean is improved from last year but after two scrimmages, after a lot of different 11-on-11 situations, 7-on-7 situations, I got with Chip and we felt like the time was right.”

While Malzahn has shared some incredibly high praise for true freshman Malik Willis this spring, the Auburn coach also made it clear that White is the team’s No. 2 option behind Stidham.

“Sean White is our No. 2 quarterback,” Malzahn continued. “Sean White is a guy we have a lot of confidence in, obviously, has won games and has performed at a high level in this league.”
