Gus Malzahn opens up on difficulties facing triple option, potential of LT Prince Tega Wanogho
Gus Malzahn spoke to the media during the SEC’s first weekly media teleconference of the 2017 season Wednesday. During his segment of the call, the Auburn coach discussed the opening season game in Jordan-Hare, his quarterback Jarrett Stidham, as well as the season opening matchup against the against the Eagles.
The Auburn-Georgia Southern game kicks off Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET on the SEC Network.
Here are the highlights from Malzhan’s call:
- First of all, my staff and myself and our team, our thoughts go out to those in Texas.
- Georgia Southern will be a tough opener, they run the triple option. When they play big schools, they play well. They won’t be intimidated.
- How much prep does it take for triple-option offense? I think quite a bit more, it’s a good thing it’s the first game. It’s unusual for college football in this day and time. You have to play assignment football. It puts stress on the players and our coaches. You’ve got to be prepared for all of it.
- What impressed you most about your starting left tackle Prince Tega Wanogho? He’s one of the most athletes on our team, he’s got a chance to be a special left tackle.
- In terms of freshmen, what will their effect be out of the gate? (DE) Big Kat (Bryant), we’ve recruited him to play and he’s impressed us. Noah (Igbinoghene), is a very talented young man that can run. He’s going to help us on offense and special teams.
- Punting duties, how close was it? It was a good competition, it took us awhile.
