Former LSU and New Orleans Saints star Hokie Gajan passed away on Monday night after a battle with cancer, according to a report from NOLA.com’s Evan Woodbery.
Gajan played fullback for four seasons at LSU, accumulating 1,536 rushing yards before becoming the No. 10 pick of the 1981 NFL Draft.
But he may be best known for his time with the Saints, during which he earned the nickname the “Bayou Bowling Ball” from late QB Ken Stabler, and later became the radio voice of the franchise.
According to Woodbery’s story:
Gajan combined his colorful wit with deep football knowledge in the booth, endearing himself to a new generation of Saints fans. He once said his only requirements on game day were “a good pair of binoculars, a media guide and a bottle of Jack Daniels.”
Gajan, a Louisana native, died at 56 years old after a battle with liposarcoma.
