The first NFL head coach firing of the 2018 season has been made.
The Cleveland Browns announced Monday that Hue Jackson is out as head coach. Jackson was in his second season with the team. Cleveland is currently 2-5-1 on the year, a step up from going 1-15 last year, but apparently not enough of a step up to satisfy ownership.
As far as the college football world is concerned, fans can expect to hear Nick Saban and Urban Meyer connected to the opening thanks to the rumor mill. Saban was the Browns defensive coordinator from 1991-94. He has called those four seasons working under Bill Belichick “the worst of his life.”
In regards to Meyer, the rumors will likely be based more on the fact that it is an NFL opening not too far from where he is living right now in Ohio. There have also been reports of “friction” within the Ohio State football staff and athletics department. Earlier Monday, Meyer responded to rumors that he was considering retiring again by saying he planned to be coaching next season.
With the NFL trending toward younger hires, however, we might not hear as much about Saban or Meyer as we would have in the past.
We are going to hear nonstop about Lincoln Riley to the Browns for the next 3 months.
