Hugh Freeze is preparing for a pivotal Year 3 as Auburn’s head football coach in 2025.
The Tigers are just 11-14 overall during Freeze’s first 2 years at the helm and are coming off of a season in-which they missed out on the postseason altogether. Looking ahead to this fall, Freeze set the expectation that Auburn needs to get back to bowl eligibility — at a minimum.
“I’m not a fool, I think we’ve got to go to a bowl game,” Hugh Freeze said. “I think our administration understands … look, I inherited a program that didn’t have a top-25 recruiting class for 4 years. You’re not going to win in this league [with that]. We’ve now had 2 full recruiting classes, both top-10. I think one more and then your roster looks complete.
“But I’m still not naive … We could have won some games last year [that we didn’t]. We’ve got to find a way to make sure we’re excellent in those areas that cost us those to put us in a position to be at least bowl-eligible, if not more. And I see no reason why we shouldn’t do that and I think that’s the expectation that our people should expect.”
Here’s a clip from Freeze’s comments:
Getting to bowl eligibility has typically not been a problem for Freeze. In 12 seasons as an FBS head coach, this was just the 2nd time one of his teams failed to get to at least 6 wins. The only other time was in 2016 when Ole Miss went 5-7, which proved to be Freeze’s final campaign in Oxford.
