With Saturday’s results, the Big 12 has taken a step closer to being eliminated from the College Football Playoff before the month of November has even arrived.

The big news Saturday from the Midwest happened in Ames, Iowa, as Iowa State took down No. 4 TCU 14-7. The Horn Frogs were undefeated and looked to debut as the Big 12’s highest ranked team in the debut College Football Playoff rankings Tuesday. Don’t look for that to be the case now, as Iowa State has taken down the Big 12’s last undefeated team.

Why should SEC fans concern themselves with the happenings of the Big 12?

With Georgia absolutely destroying Florida in Jacksonville, the Bulldogs have taken another step closer to an undefeated regular season mark and a likely date with Alabama in the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta. Should the Dawgs get there unscathed and meet an undefeated Alabama, which seems to be an annual occurrence these days, if the Big 12 has played itself out of a Playoff bid, the chances of the SEC getting two teams in the field are likely to improve.

Also of some potential interest for SEC fans, Iowa State coach Matt Campbell has now beaten two Top 5 teams this season. That’s more Top 5 wins than all the other SEC East coaches combined for their coaching careers. Perhaps most remarkable of all? Campbell’s team won both games with a walk-on backup QB after the starter was lost for the season.

With plenty of openings expected across the SEC, don’t be surprised to see Campbell’s name pop up often.
