While the Iron Bowl is a massive on-the-field rivalry, things couldn’t be wider off the field for the schools’ athletic financials, according to reports from AL.com.

Alabama athletics reported a $33 million operating surplus in 2013-14. Alabama’s revenue was $153,234,273, and the reported expenses were $120,184,128, leaving the athletic department with a $33,050,145 surplus, a $6 million increase from the previous year.

Football was obviously the big revenue driver for the Crimson Tide, racking up over $36 million in revenue, compared to nearly $35 million in expenses.

Conversely, Auburn University reported a $13.6 million deficit in 2013-14. Auburn recorded $113,716,004 in revenue, while expenses jumped to $127,340,380, leaving the athletic department with the $13.6 million deficit.

It’s the second year in a row the Tigers have reported a deficit. Last year’s deficit was $865,994, which is a drop in the bucket compared to the new deficit.

Of course, Auburn is still paying Gene Chizik’s buyout, along with his former assistants’ buyouts, which helped attribute to the deficit.
