As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to have its effect on sports, this coming college sports season could look drastically different than in years past.
For example, it’s possible the football season won’t be able to start until the spring semester. If that’s the case, basketball could be moved back, too.
On Monday, ESPN basketball analyst Jay Bilas joined “The Paul Finebaum Show” and said he could see basketball starting in January and running into the spring (via 247Sports):
“Well we don’t even know if it’ll go off on schedule in October and November,” Bilas said. “You hear different things about the NBA. The NBA is not gonna be obviously on a normal schedule for a start. So they may push back.
“I could certainly see college basketball being a second-semester endeavor. Heck, there are discussions now, as you probably know far better than I do, about football playing after the Christmas holidays. So you could start in January or February or whenever and then run it for the rest of the school year. That comes with a lot of different issues, including going into the next season for college football.”
It’s still early, so we don’t know for sure what will happen with the college basketball season yet. But, it’ll be important to the NCAA that this year’s March Madness men’s and women’s tournaments get played.
