Jeff Traylor’s name has been mentioned as a potential candidate at Texas A&M, notably by ESPN college football insider Pete Thamel shortly after Jimbo Fisher’s dismissal. The UTSA head coach was asked for comment during a Monday media opportunity.

“It’s always sad to see any coach get let go of,” Traylor said when asked about Fisher’s firing. “People like to talk about it, it’s almost sickening, they don’t understand the ramifications that go through the entire building. It’s always sad, especially a school that’s as important to our state as that school is.”

As for being linked to the job, Traylor sees it as a positive reflection of his program. He points to having a Texas background, being named the state’s High School Coach of the Year for Class 4A 4 times before getting into college coaching. UTSA is 37-13 in Traylor’s tenure, posting double-digit wins in the 2021 and ’22 campaigns.

“It’s natural. It means when you’ve been winning a lot of ball games,” Traylor said. “… That speculation is going to always come up when you’ve had great players like I’ve had.”

Traylor added that after being linked to jobs in previous years, he’s used to addressing it with his players.

“I told them it’s a good thing, means they’re winning a lot of ball games for us,” Traylor told reporters. “As long as they keep winning ball games, there’s always going to be speculation.”
