The No. 1-ranked Texas Longhorns are currently battling the No. 3-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes in a premier week 1 heavyweight bout. While Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning has received most of the hype leading up to the game, he’s far from the best player in the game.

That distinction would go to star OSU sophomore wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, who had arguably the best freshman season of all time for the Buckeyes in 2024, helping lead them to their first national title in a decade.

The usually dominant pass catcher got off to a very uncharacteristic start against Texas, however, as he and quarterback Julian Sayin struggled to get on the same page early on, and Smith actually dropped two passes once Sayin did start to dial up his number.

Smith’s struggles early on for Ohio State reportedly prompted the superstar sophomore to swap out his gloves towards the end of the first quarter to gain more grip on the ball. That’s according to FOX’s Jenny Taft:

Whether or not the switch in gloves has the kind of impact Smith is hoping for remains to be seen, but a guy as talented as Smith isn’t the type to be kept down for too long. As such, Sayin is sure to keep looking his way for the rest of the game as they attempt to knock off the Longhorns at home in a week one stunner.
