Jeremy Pruitt explains why incoming freshman is switching positions

Hampton, Georgia, native Jerrod Means is switching positions in fall camp.
Means signed with the Vols as a wide receiver, but Jeremy Pruitt thinks he’ll see the field faster at defensive back. The receiver position is also in better shape depth-wise than the defensive backs, too.
So, 3-star Means is making a switch, and Pruitt explained the details Friday during his post-practice media availability.
“We’re just making sure we can get the best players on the field,” Pruitt said. “We have guys with experience on the offensive side at wide receiver. We have four senior wide receivers, and [Josh] Palmer and [Jordan] Murphy’s played a pretty good bit of ball; so, you’re talking about six guys there. We think Jerrod’s a really good athlete, and we want to make sure that we have the best 22 guys on the field. So, we’re just giving him a look.
“He played wide receiver the first month of the summer, which we’re not really out there, so there’s not a whole lot of feedback. But he played the last half of the summer at defensive back. We’re going to work him for this camp at corner to give him an opportunity to contribute.”
Behind starters Alontae Taylor and Bryce Thompson, the secondary could use some more depth. Means has perfect size to become a nice corner at 6-2, 215-pounds.
Of course, though, Means could always move back to receiver, too. It appears that Pruitt is merely getting a look at Means at another position.
Means was ranked as the nation’s No. 223 wide receiver and the state of Georgia’s No. 185 overall prospect for the class of 2019, according to 247Sports Composite Rankings.
