Quinnen Williams’ second NFL season is ending early.
On Wednesday, New York Jets head coach Adam Gase announced that Williams is being placed on injured reserve with a neck injury, making him unavailable for the final two games of the team’s season. Williams left New York’s Sunday game early after suffering a concussion.
Williams’ second year in the NFL has been widely described as a breakout season. The No. 3 overall pick from the 2019 NFL Draft has nearly doubled his tackles from his rookie season (28 to 55), while also recording significantly more tackles for loss (4 to 10), sacks (2.5 to 7.0) and QB hits (6 to 14).
Gase noted that Williams has had a more consistent impact this season.
“Last year, I felt like there would be a couple of games in a row where you didn’t really feel him,” Gase told reporters, per ESPN’s Rich Cimini. “But this year, I felt like the high majority of the game you felt him. If you were on the other team, you felt him whether you were playing quarterback or in the running game.”
Jets fans committed to the team’s tanking efforts may be glad to see Williams sidelined for the games against the Cleveland Browns and New England Patriots.
