Jim McElwain reacts to latest Florida suspensions, names starting QB for Michigan
The biggest news in the SEC Wednesday came out of Gainesville as Florida announced the suspensions of starting running back Jordan Scarlett and redshirt freshman receiver Rick Wells. The suspensions are indefinite.
While losing two players to suspension is never ideal, Florida now has a total of 10 players that will be held out for the Michigan game due to suspensions. During his Wednesday press conference, head coach Jim McElwain.
“Obviously, this afternoon we were made aware of a few more guys that won’t be going with us this weekend, Jordan among them,” McElwain said. “They will not be participating in team activities. The last thing I’m going to do is look the other way.
“It’s an opportunity for some more guys to go play and play their tails off… That’s why they came (to Florida), they came to play.”
McElwain also revealed the team’s starting QB for Michigan.
“There are no secrets in this business, we will start Feleipe (Franks),” McElwain revealed.
So why Franks over Malik Zaire and Luke Del Rio?
“It was the whole body of work from spring on,” the Florida coach said. “He deserves it. He’s done a good job.”
As reported early, the suspensions of Scarlett and Wells have been in connection with the credit card fraud that left seven other players suspended earlier in fall camp. When pressed why these new suspensions came weeks later, McElwain didn’t have any answers.
“We were made aware of it this morning,” McElwain said.
When asked if any more suspensions would be coming, McElwain indicated that he doesn’t expect any more suspensions to be coming.
