What Jim McElwain said after Florida’s crucial win against South Carolina
Florida is one step closer to winning the SEC East.
Quarterback Austin Appleby helped the Gators get off to a fast start, and their defense took over from there in a 20-7 win against South Carolina on senior day in The Swamp.
Appleby, filling in for the injured Luke Del Rio, completed 17-of-21 passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns, while sophomore Jordan Scarlett rushed for 134 yards. The Gamecocks (5-5, 3-5) managed just 256 yards in coach Will Muschamp’s return to Gainesville.
Florida (7-2, 5-2) can lock up the division crown and a spot in the SEC Championship Game with a win at LSU next week. If the Gators lose, Tennessee has to win out against Missouri and Vanderbilt to force a tiebreaker.
