Joey Gatewood has been a quarterback at 3 schools. He gave wide receiver a try last season, but did not make an impact. In his sixth year, Gatewood is trying a third position at his fourth school.

Gatewood transferred to Louisville for the 2023 season. Word out of Cardinals camp is that Gatewood is in the mix to contribute at tight end this fall.

Gatewood is in Year 6 of his college football career. His 2018 redshirt and the NCAA’s COVID-19 waiver for 2020 allow him to play in 2023 after 3 transfers.

Out of Bartram Trail in Jacksonville, Florida, Gatewood was a top-50 recruit in the Class of 2018, ranked 4-stars and the No. 1 ATH by the 247Sports Composite. He chose to play for Gus Malzahn at Auburn over 33 other scholarship offers.

Gatewood made just 1 appearance for Auburn in his first season, allowing him to redshirt. He made 7 appearances as the backup quarterback in 2020.

Ahead of the 2020 season, Gatewood transferred to Kentucky. He did not receive a waiver to play for the Wildcats until after the season started. Gatewood made 6 appearances for the Wildcats in the COVID-shortened season.

After Will Levis won the Kentucky starting job in 2021, Gatewood entered the transfer portal in August. He landed at UCF, reuniting with Malzahn.

At UCF, Gatewood played quarterback his first season. He appeared in 10 games, primarily as a runner. Gatewood switched to wide receiver in 2022, but did not record any statistics last season.

Gatewood and the Cardinals will face Kentucky on Nov. 25 in Louisville to wrap up the 2023 regular season.
