South Carolina’s defensive backfield is poised to look completely different as the Gamecocks begin the Shane Beamer era in 2021.
If you missed the news from earlier today, starting South Carolina safety Jammie Robinson has entered the NCAA transfer portal. Shortly after South Carolina’s final game of the season against Kentucky, Robinson made a since-deleted post on social media that indicated he planned to leave the Gamecock program.
Now comes news that sophomore cornerback John Dixon has also entered the NCAA transfer portal.
As always, it should be noted that players can enter the transfer portal and remain with their current program. However, entering the portal is the first step toward leaving their current school.
Dixon made 22 appearances in his two seasons in Columbia registering 37 tackles, five passes defended and one interception during his Gamecock career.
Since Will Muschamp’s firing at South Carolina, starting corners Jaycee Horn and Israel Mukuamu both opted out and announced their plans to declare for the 2021 NFL Draft, Shilo Sanders left to join his father’s Jackson State program, while RJ Roderick’s status remains up in the air.
Provided all those players leave, in addition to Jammie Robinson and John Dixon, the Gamecocks could be breaking in an entirely different secondary in 2021.
