While Ole Miss has drawn headlines for its “Flipmas” moves of plucking recruits away from other schools, Mississippi State pulled in one of its own on Wednesday.
The Bulldogs received a signature from Canon Boone of Dickinson, Texas. The 247Sports 3-star offensive tackle prospect originally committed to Virginia Tech on August 15th and thought he was done with recruiting, he told 247Sports. The 6-foot-4, 280-pound offensive tackle had a reported 22 offers.
Was the job security of Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuente a question?
“It was pretty tough because I liked Virginia Tech a lot,” he said. “I like their program and how they do things. I love Coach Fuente and I am happy he is staying there. But I felt like Mississippi State was better for my future and better for me and my family.”
The final decision, though, may have come down to conference strength.
“My first decision was very close and those two teams were 1A and 1B. The SEC played a big factor, too. Then I had a good relationship with Coach (Mason) Miller. We are able to talk about recruiting and everything and how they will use me there and how I fit in their program.”
Boone said the coaching staff has discussed him playing all three line positions, and he likes the Air Raid in part because he said he feels, “that pass pro is what I do best.”
