Jordan Matthews, 4-star CB out of Louisiana, announces SEC commitment

Jordan Matthews, a 4-star cornerback out of Baton Rouge, Louisiana (Woodlawn), has announced a commitment to play in the SEC.

Matthews committed to Tennessee. He is listed at 6 foot and 165 pounds and is ranked the No. 15 cornerback in the country, according to the 247Sports Composite, and the No. 9 player in the state of Louisiana. He has a reported 33 offers, and was recruited to the Vols by Willie Martinez and Tim Banks. Michigan, Stanford, Texas and Alabama were also in the mix for his services.

Unverified size but looks the part of a P5 corner to the naked eye. Plays long with wiry strength.

Physical tools and functional athleticism should provide for versatility across varying coverage types. Makes an effort to shrink the window and pester at the catch point.

Excellent multi-sport context thanks to strong track data. Top five finisher as a junior in Louisiana 5A in the 100 and 200 meters with PRs of 10.66 and 21.29, respectively.

Displays corresponding recovery speed in the intermediate-to-deep passing game. Willing to mix it up on the perimeter vs. the run. Shows impressive closing speed and pursuit range.

A bit reactive at times and can hone technique and awareness. Can improve ball skills and ball productivity in the form of turnovers.

Excellent candidate to get on the field early on special teams with matching reps on block units. Eyeball test re: physical tools and verified athleticism on the track should provide plenty of developmental upside. Projects as a high-major corner with the long-term potential to become an NFL Draft pick.
