It’s the Pete Golding era in Ole Miss, and Jordan Rodgers believes that in his second game as the head coach of the Rebels, he outcoached the legendary Kirby Smart.
Golding and his Rebels won the Sugar Bowl on Thursday night over Smart and his Bulldogs by a score of 39-34. In a game that many had already written off the Rebels in, Golding led them into New Orleans and hung 39 points on a Smart-led defense that hadn’t given up that many points since facing Ole Miss back in mid-October, when the Bulldogs won 43-35.
“That was his second game as the head coach of the Ole Miss Rebels, going against probably the greatest coach in college football right now in Kirby Smart, a 2-time national champion as a head coach at Georgia, and Pete out-coached him. He really did,” Rodgers said about Golding. “He made decisions when they needed to be made. He was aggressive at times. He inspired his players. He allowed them to play free, he allowed them to be aggressive… I thought it was a fantastic job from Pete.”
Rodgers went on to compliment Golding for his ability to keep the Ole Miss ship from sinking when all signs pointed to this thing blowing up when Lane Kiffin left the way he did before the Playoff.
