Jordan Scarlett may just be the toughest running back to tackle in the SEC
Jordan Scarlett may not be a household name outside of Gainesville just yet but should the junior running back receive an increase in carries in 2017, he could prove to be one of the Southeastern Conference’s breakout stars next season.
After leading the Gators in carries, rushing yards and rushing touchdowns last season while participating in a four-man rotation at running back, an uptick in carries for Scarlett is likely to be in the gameplan for a Florida team likely leaning on a new starting quarterback. While Scarlett emerged as the team’s best option in the backfield last season, according to one advanced stat, he may also have proven to be the league’s toughest back to bring down.
According to Austin Gayle of Pro Football Focus, Scarlett led the SEC in the percentage of yards gained after contact in 2016:
#Gators RB J. Scarlett earned 75.4% of his yards after contact last season, the highest % of any SEC RB (minimum 500 total yards).

With an experienced offensive line returning in Gainesville for the first time in the Jim McElwain era, Scarlett could have more opportunities to prove his value to the team in 2017. Considering the offensive line looks to be an improved unit next season, Scarlett may not need to gain as many yards after contact but it’s nice to know he can do just that when called upon.
